The Band in Review

I think I can honestly say that no-one in the history of popular music has ever been more infectiously keen about their music than Dan from Dummy Head Stereo. There I was minding my own business, scribbling a few notes and drinking my umpteenth pint of lager, when suddenly this guy pole-vaults over the back of his seat (no mean feat in itself) and starts telling me about the band...

Dummy Head Stereo formed about a year ago, and have spent the time becoming major players on the Sheffield music scene with multiple performances at venues as diverse as 7-by-7, the Leadmill, Lamacq's Radio 1 sessions, and Lakeside festival. With so much going on in each and every track they necessarily pre-prepare some of their material on mini-disc, but as a rule they try to do as much of their material live as possible; the result is a band who are so absolutely together it's frightening. Their uniquely eclectic sound reflects the remarkable depth of their musical roots. Dan has collected an astounding 15000-odd singles going all the way back to the 1950s, though he's really a musical child of the 60s and 70s; Wilf's a metallica freak (oh well), Robin's the Beck and Super Furries aficionado, and Dawn prefers the gentle strains of deep purple, suitably entangled with 80s, Madonna, Duran2 and the like. All in all, my kind of people.

The music is truly original, and the number of embedded styles so enormous that it makes far more sense to say they have a style all their own than to start explaining who they sound like. But if you want to experience sounds at the extreme edge of indie-ness, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better example of musical innovation.

Constructed for SheffieldMusic.Com (25 September 2001) by Alch. Dan was "interviewed" on July 10th, 2001 at the NCPM at Sound Off 2, a project funded in part by the European Regional Development Fund and co-ordinated by Andy Muir at Red Tape Studios.
